Here is the list of obedience classes available at shows. Some shows might not have all classes.[/i]
NOVICE
This class is open to all dogs. It requires a heel on leash and figure eight as well as a heel off leash. It also requires a stand for examination and a recall. A long sit of 1 minute and a long down of 3 minutes are also required. A qualifying score is one of 170 points or more. You must receive five qualifying scores under five different judges to get this title.
OPEN[/i]
This class is open to dogs that have gotten their novice title. This requires a heel and figure eight done off leash. A drop on recall is also needed. A retrieve on the flat and over a high jump are also required along with a broad jump. A long sit of 3 minutes and a long down of 5 minutes are also required. A qualifying score is 170 points. You must receive seven qualifying scores under different judges to get this title.
UTILITY[/i]
This class is open to dogs that have their novice and open titles. A signal exercise of stand, stay, sit, come, and down is required - no voice commands. Scent discrimination is needed to find the handlers scent amongst of pile of articles. A directed retrieve is needed to show that the dog can follow a directional signal to retrieve and return something promptly. A moving stand and examination is required where the dog must heel, stay, and stand as the handler moves away; dog must accept an examination and return to the handler on command. There is a directed jump where the dog must go away from the handler to turn and sit before jumping over whichever jump the handler indicates then return to the handler. A qualifying score is 170 points. To earn this title you must receive ten qualifying scores.
